Background and challenges for Trustworthy AI

According to the United Nations Innovation Report, the global AI market is expected to grow to $1.6 trillion (JPY 220 trillion) by 2030. AI systems are now increasingly utilized in medical devices, autonomous driving, critical infrastructure such as factories and power plants, and credit screening, where safety and trustworthiness are essential.

On June 14, 2023, the European Parliament approved the EU AI Act, the world’s leading AI regulation that focuses on requirements for high-risk AI systems. The International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) has also already published 20 AI-related international standards, with many more draft standards in development.

However, actually conducting quality assurance of AI systems is often an inconsistent, difficult, and time-consuming process. One of the key challenges of this decade is to develop technology to properly evaluate the trustworthiness of AI systems.
